A delayed message is only useful if it arrives somewhere you will notice. Some moments call for a quiet badge on the lock screen. Others belong in your inbox, where they can sit beside the rest of the day’s reading. Occasionally you want both.
Send When treats delivery as a choice, not a single pipe. When your note’s time comes, it can reach you by push notification, by email to yourself, or by both — the same timed delivery, different surfaces.
Push when you need a nudge
Push is good for time-sensitive returns: the packing list the evening before you leave, the talking points ten minutes before a call, the “don’t forget the form” that should interrupt lightly but clearly. A push carries a reference to your note so you can open it in the app; it does not dump the full text into the notification shade.
That keeps the channel tidy while still giving you the prompt at the right minute.
Email when you want a record
Email yourself when the note should live in a searchable place, or when you will be at a desk rather than glancing at a phone. Longer reflections, reference material, and anything you might forward or archive later often fit better as mail.
You can also add a verified extra delivery address if you want a note to land somewhere specific. Until that address is confirmed with a code, nothing is sent there — so delivery stays intentional.
Both, when the stakes are uneven
Some notes matter enough that one channel is not enough. Choosing both means the push can catch you on the move while the email remains as a durable copy. You are not guessing which surface you will be on at 9am next Tuesday.
- Push for urgency; email for permanence.
- Email-only for reflective or long-form notes.
- Both when missing the moment would be costly.
Delayed, not forgotten
Scheduling a message for later is not the same as parking it in a drafts folder and hoping. Timed delivery means the note leaves your “open loops” list and comes back when you asked. If plans change, you adjust the time or send it now. Until then, you can stop rehearsing it in your head.
For the capture side — writing the when in ordinary English — see plain-language reminders. For the broader habit of writing ahead, read schedule notes to your future self.
